A Tablet Running Both Windows and Android Side By Side

Samsung ATIV Q tablet

The latest innovation from Samsung is the ATIV Q tablet, a streamlined 13-inch tablet that is extremely powerful and not that chunky for a tight competitor to the likes of Microsoft Surface Pro. It is thin, extremely powerful, and has a large brilliant QHD resolution screen, which is higher than Full HD. QHD is 3200x1800 pixels, while FHD is 1920x1280 pixels. Let’s take a brief look at this device.

Technical Specifications

The tablet-laptop mash-up is not yet in the market. We may update this post as it is made available in the market. Here are the brief technical specifications of the tablet.

Display 13.3 inch; 3200x1800 px (the highest in the market); 16 million colors
Processor Intel Haswell Core i5 processor (details unknown)
RAM 4 GB
Graphics Intel HD 4000
Storage 128 GB SSD
Battery life 9 hours of usage
Operating system(s) Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean; Windows 8
Weight 1.29 kg
Other features Camera (720p HD recording)
YouTube upload support
USB 3.0 and Micro USB
Micro HDMI

The technical specifications are not complete as Samsung has not yet revealed the details yet. However, from what we can see, this is one of the best portable Windows 8 tablets out there. It can indeed be a tight competition to other existing tablets, notably Microsoft Surface Pro and iPad 4. Also, it is probably the lightest of all mid-range Windows 8 tablets that have a screen size of 13 inch or greater.

The resolution is one very important aspect that makes this tablet pretty unique. It is QHD+ (Quad HD+) at 3200x1800. If you remember our earlier post on display resolutions, Quad HD is 2560x1440 pixels, which is close to iPad 4’s resolution. This extreme resolution and an aspect ratio of 16:9 makes ATIV Q the best in the current market to watch movies or play games or browse with all the richness there is.

The design of the tablet is also unique. It has a keyboard and a stand at the top of the keyboard that contains the motherboard, processor and all the internal components. A depression formed on the top of the keyboard acts as the placeholder for the stand.

Just as other innovative Windows tablet designs you can find, this is a quite unique one. The hinge on top of the stand can be used to rotate the display in 360 degrees. This is a design quite similar to the Acer Aspire R7 we previewed earlier. Here, you have some of the pictures of the ATIV Q.

As mentioned earlier, the tablet hybrid has two operating systems, Windows 8 and Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2. The tablet has a home button with Windows logo that can be used to switch between Windows 8 and Android.

In addition to all these, ATIV Q comes with a stylus similar to the S pen on Galaxy Note family. This is a great added advantage to the Android/Windows dual OS device. One other similar device was introduced by Asus a few days ago, Asus Transformer Trio that also has Android along with Windows 8.

We will not be seeing ATIV Q right now in the market. It will however come to us pretty soon. Also, these innovations will create a new era of computers that come with Android and Windows preinstalled, working side by side. It will take our productivity to a new level altogether with the capability of running Windows and Android applications at the same time.

10 Worst Android Antivirus Apps You Can Get

Are you careful about the security of your smartphone? For your Android device, Google Play store offers a number of antivirus apps. There are paid and free apps from professional companies like Avast!, Kaspersky, and Lookout, as well as free antivirus apps that install and work relatively faster. Among the security apps found on the Play Store, there are a number of free, lightweight ones, most of which enjoy a great number of downloads and high ratings. Most of the ratings are done by people who find the interface easy to use, but have no idea whether the app actually works or not. Many of us feel the app is great if the interface is cool, don’t we? It is painful to note that most of these free apps not only fail at most antivirus tests, but experts regard them to be incapable of detecting any threat. Last year, the latest mobile antivirus test report was published by AV-Test.org , in which they tested and rated the best and the worst antivirus programs among multiple platforms. ...

Five Great Alternatives for iGoogle Home Page Portal

Google’s popular home page service, iGoogle will be retired on November 1st, 2013. That’s a little over a year of managing your home page through this service. It came as a great disappointment to me since I had been using the service for a long time. I have a nice home page set up in iGoogle with news from BBC, CNN, and others; my calendar; a widget for time management; topic-specific news on technology, stock quotes, weather; and some other interesting stuff. It was a page that I woke up to for many days. It seems obvious that the popularity of home page services has been coming down in the recent years; another popular service in this arena, Netvibes has turned into something else entirely. I could have turned my attention to Netvibes after they retire iGoogle, but that won’t happen now. I will miss Google’s home page, and before that I want to find out another portal service that I could love as I do iGoogle. In search for one, I found these great services which can replace iG...

Should Microsoft Consider Buying Nokia?

In a recent talk between Microsoft and Nokia, the two companies contemplated a merger. WSJ reported the story  yesterday, and for quite a while, industry leaders have been cogitating on this move. Since 2011, Nokia has been in tie-up with Microsoft to use Windows Phone operating system on all of its major devices, notably the Nokia Lumia series ( Lumia 920 , 928 , etc). This has helped both companies in great ways. Here is an analysis as to whether the merger could pave way to success to these companies. Nokia Nokia, the Finnish smartphone maker, has been quite big in the market up until Android and iOS destroyed the stronghold of its Symbian OS. Nokia subsequently fell from the top and now has the tenth position in global smartphone market with about 2.8 percent of the market, according to research firm Gartner. Nokia lost its stock value considerably, and the strong stock, which some time in 2007 was trading at a peak rate of 40 dollars, now trades at around 3-4 dollars...
